For me compilation runs fine. I had configure'd with enabled font  
backend.

You could try to 'make clean' and then update again ...


BTW, how comes that on your GNU/Linux system _BSD_SOURCE is defined?  
Even in Mac OS X, which *is* based on FreeBSD, this is not defined ...
