Hi,
I found french-utf8.pl script to localise emacs menu items to french. But I fail to load it. To do so I add this lines into .emacs file :
;; --------------------------------------------
;; Tell emacs where is your personal elisp lib dir
(add-to-list 'load-path "~/.emacs.d/elisp")
;; load the packaged named xyz.
(load-library "french-utf8.pl")
;; --------------------------------------------
The result is a warning and menu always in french :
///////////////////////////////////////////////////
Warning (initialization): An error occurred while loading `/home/gelinp/.emacs':
File error: Cannot open load file, french-utf8
To ensure normal operation, you should investigate and remove the
cause of the error in your initialization file. Start Emacs with
the `--debug-init' option to view a complete error backtrace.
///////////////////////////////////////////////////
Is .pl files sames as .el scripts ? Do I need to modify the .emacs file ?
Thank you for your help.

'.pl' files are perl files.
You don't localize emacs from emacs lisp, because a lot of strings are
used and referenced from C code.
You have to do it from the source distribution of emacs, apparently, by
putting this french-utf8.pl file in some specific place in the sources
directory, and then compiling emacs will run this script and add the
French strings. I don't know the details, but do read the comment in
french-utf8.pl and perhaps some further documentation in the place where
you found it.

Ok, thank you ! So I read into the "french-utf8.pl" file the information below :
# Create a modules subdirectory in your data directory, and put the
# file in there. It will be loaded automatically.
So I displayed the data-directory varaiable content : Its value is "/usr/share/emacs/23.4/etc/"? I created a "modules" directory into and put "french-utf8.pl" into.
I restarded emacs : No result, menu interface is allways english... Do I need to call a command ? I don't think so. No warning else, all seems ok !
What can I do ?

Hmmm I doubt this file will localize any emacs menus...
It seems dedicated to Oddmuse.
It contains a list a pairs of sentences (english and french).
But I don't recognize any standard emacs menu item.

This file does not contain any emacs-lisp instruction.
It is NOT an emacs package to be loaded with "load-library".
It is a perl program, to be interpreted by a perl interpret.
It contains a call to the function AddModuleDescription
which seems to be an Oddmuse function
as described in http://oddmuse.org/wiki/Modules
So, sorry, you are on a wrong path...
I don't know how to localize emacs in french.
I've never seen an emacs localized in french.
That would be a _lot_ of work, since you may have strings in
- C data
- C code
- lisp data
- lisp code
- lisp documentation
etc.
An interesting project though...
