To add to what B.T. said: Emacs is Free Software: that means you are
permitted to use (and to change) the program freely, and to give copies
of it to others. The only thing you have to do: if you distribute
changed versions of it, you have to make available the source of those
changes. But read the GPL <http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html> to get
the whole story.

Of course you may contribute financially to the Free Software
Foundation, but that is voluuntary.
