If it's *not* the antique version of GNU Emacs, then it might be due
to your customisation. Have you tried to launch GNU Emacs with option
-Q or '--no-site-file --no-init-file' or --no-shared-memory? How is
it when you launch it in a terminal emulation with -nw?
Is /tmp writable for all?
