Hi all,

Bonjour à tous,

I just installed Enhanced Carbon Emacs (version 2.1, emacs 21.3.50.4)
on mac os X 10.2.4, and I have no succes trying to save mac-roman
encoded files.

I tried adding a number of things to my .emacs, such as

(prefer-coding-system 'mac-roman-mac)
(set-buffer-file-coding-system 'mac-roman-mac)
(set default-buffer-file-coding-system 'mac-roman-mac)

with no result. The files do get saved, but are unreadable by other mac
apps. Even re-opening them with emacs I get a bunch of ????'s (only
accentuated characters such as é, à, ô, etc. come out OK...).

For some odd reason I can correctly open mac-roman files, but saving
them does not work.

Any help will be greatly appreciated !

Regards,

Salve,

does it work to say C-x RET f, then choose the right coding system,
then do C-x C-s?

To read it back in, you might have to do C-x RET c and choose the
right coding system before C-x C-f on the file.

[(prefer-coding-system 'mac-roman-mac)]

No problem here to save files in mac-roman with the above setting in
.emacs. But BTW, then I have all buffers create charset macintosh, such
like in Gnus messages too. I think, that's not a good idea.
Any suggestions to set 'prefer-coding-system 'mac-roman-mac' as default
and for Gnus something like 8859-15 or utf-8, and the best way is for
only in outgoing messages.

I just tried it, does not work. Quite puzzling...

There was a bug like that with the mac-roman coding system that got
fixed some weeks ago. Are you using current Emacs from CVS or did you
download a binary? If you downloaded a binary, you may want to
compile your own emacs from CVS instead.

Hope this helps, benny

OK, i have it found myself

;; Preferred coding systems for encoding outgoing mails.
