ispell spanish problem

Dear Emacs community,

After failing to obtain on the web any hint to solve the
following problem, I decided to post it.  I have ispell 3.1
installed on my system and GNU Emacs 21.2.1
(i386-debian-linux-gnu, X toolkit, Xaw3d scroll bars) of
2002-03-22 on raven, modified by Debian.  I also have the
following element in the alist of dictionaries
`ispell-dictionary-alist'

("castellano8"
 "[A-Z\301\311\315\321\323\332\334a-z\341\351\355\361\363\372\374]"
 "[^A-Z\301\311\315\321\323\332\334a-z\341\351\355\361\363\372\374]"
 "[-]"
 nil
 ("-B" "-d" "castellano")
  "~latin1" iso-8859-1)

For all the others entries of this alist: "russian", "american"
and "british", `ispell-buffer' and `ispell-region' work fine,
however `ispell-buffer' and `ispell-region' with the
"castellano8" dictionary can not recognize non-ascii
characters. It must be noted that in a terminal the command:

ispell -T latin1 -d castellano <file>

works fine. Do you have any hint for solving this problem?

Hm, a quite similar element works for me (Emacs 21.3, International
Ispell Version 3.2.06 08/01/01):

 ("espanol-latin1"
  "[A-Za-z\301\311\315\321\323\332\334\341\351\355\361\363\372\374]"
  "[^A-Za-z\301\311\315\321\323\332\334\341\351\355\361\363\372\374]"
  "[']" nil
  ("-B" "-d" "espanol")
  "~latin1" iso-latin-1)

I bet this is yet another latin-9 problem.

I'd recommend to use "[[:alpha:]]" and "[^[:alpha:]]" here in general.

Ah, I remember now that we discussed this previously.  But I don't
remember which was the best solution.  Setting the locale to Latin-1
or adding corresponding `ispell-dictionary-alist' entries for Latin-0?

Probably didn't use [:alpha:] for Emacs-20 compatibility.

Latin-*WHAT*??  :)

Anyways, fixing the locale is of course the proper thing to do.

[Slightly more seriously:  It should be enough to make sure that the
regexps match latin-9 characters.  I don't think that additional
entries for `ispell-dictionary-alist' are really necessary.]

I see.  What about "\\w" and "\\W"?  Did those already exist in Emacs
20?

Otherwise one would have to specify each necessary character for every
relevant charset (in the mule sense) separately, using \x.. in the
regexp.

Thanks. I won't be really back for another five to six weeks, though,
due to both technical problems and a serious lack of time.  OTOH I am
finally going to have a permanent DSL connection to the 'net in my new
flat.  Horrayh!

@Luis:

Please show us the output of "locale" in an xterm before starting
Emacs.  Call emacs with "emacs -q -no-site-file" and show us the
output of `M-x describe-coding-system RET' in this Emacs session.

I don't really need Emacs-20 compatibility anymore.  I was just to
lazy to change it as long as it works.  If I change it, I can as well
use [:alpha:].

I already recognized that something is wrong: Not posting with
charset=utf-8, posting via Google instead of Unicode-Emacs/Gnus ...

enable-local-variables's value is t

*Control use of local variables in files you visit.
The value can be t, nil or something else.
A value of t means file local variables specifications are obeyed;
nil means they are ignored; anything else means query.
This variable also controls use of major modes specified in
a -*- line.

That was not another latin-9 problem, that was my stupidity.
The element in `ispell-dictionary-alist' that I posted first,
together with yours, and the one recomended by Oliver (using
"[[:alpha:]]" and "[^[:alpha:]]") all work fine. The problem
was (I must acknowledge) that I was working with large old
files, near the beginning of them, without realizing that at
the end of the file there were local variables defined :-( and
among them "Local IspellDict:"

I'm very sorry for the false alarm and very grateful for your
comments. May be it's time for writing an elisp function that
pop-up a window with the local variables of the file you are
opening.

You didn't try it, right?  Setting enable-local-variables to a value
different from t and nil _will_ open a popup with this information.

It _is_ exactly what you were asking for.

Thank you very much, I overlooked this information in the
manual. This is not exactly what I want but it is useful. Opening
most of my files I'd like to keep the local variables values
defined in the files, but I want to be aware of them. That's
why I was thinking of a window popup with this information
when opening a file.

You're right, I didn't. I was taking the documentation of the
variable literally and it says: "anything else means query",
so I thought that, in that case, a message asking whether to
enable the variables was displayed without showing the
variables themselves. Now, I realized that such a message
would be incomplete, so the documentation is probably fine.
