Hello,

I don't know if this is a Slacko issue or a setting I'm over
looking; I haven't had this problem on other
distros, but on Slacko 5.4 (Puppy Linux) when I type C-q C-tab I get: ^@

How to switch back to normal clear space tabs?

C-q means insert the next character literally. C-tab is not a
character. Perhaps it chose null character (^@) instead.

I have C-tab set to insert a real TAB character.
