Help

I used emacs a few years ago and have now come back to it.

Before when I was in text or perhaps fundamental mode there was a toggle
to switch between showing control characters (e.g. ^M) and reverting to
normal text. 

I can't find it anywhere, could you tell me please.

Sorry to bother you for such a small matter.
