I had copy-pasted the following code to bind filename to mode: (setq auto-mode-alist (append (list '("\\.php" . php-mode) auto-mode-alist))) Replacing with this, fixed the problem: (add-to-list 'auto-mode-alist '("\\.php$" . php-mode)) Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. -- troels
