I frequently use buffers that doesn't have a file assiociated to it.
Is it possible to make grep work on those buffers? Perhaps through
stdin? Other alternatives?

M-x occur
In Emacs 22, also M-x multi-occur.

C-x h C-u M-| grep -e 'regexp' RET
Or
C-x h M-| grep -e 'regexp' RET
if you want the result in a new buffer.
