Ah! Thank you! Got it finally.
(Turned out specifically what i needed for doing it (with
font-lock-type-face in my case) was:
(define-generic-mode 'foo
nil nil
(list
blah-blah
'("(\\(\\*\\))" 1 font-lock-type-face))
blah-blah))
