auto-fill and line-continuation characters

Is there a way to get auto-fill-mode (or maybe something else?) to
automatically insert a line-continuation character at the end of any
line it fills?

Thorn:

Since fill inserts a newline at the fill column, probably the best you can
do is to replace globally this newline with something like the pair
slash/newline.
