cannot get a GUI from Emacs 21.4

I am very new to Linux. I just installed a Knoppix to my HD which does
not have emacs. So emacs became the first app I downloaded and
compiled.

I used ./configure and make then make install. After that which emacs
shows /user/bin/emacs. I think I am done. So I ran it. But all I get
this a text mode emacs (same as emacs -nw).

I searched the newsgroup and verified $DISPLAY. It is correctly set to
:0.0
Even if I run emacs -d :0.0, it is the same result w/o any warning or
error

I try to run emacs from the KDE's run command window instead of a
shell. But nothing happens. (not even a terminal emacs)

Could anyone help me? I can run other app with GUI from terminal, such
as kwrite, display, etc.

Did you enable X ?

./configure --prefix=/usr/local --with-x

Make sure that you have installed a lot of development packages!  
Linux is usually packed as an enduser product, so even compilers are  
not installed. And since you configured before you compiled: what is  
the configure output telling you? This output is no waste of terminal  
space ...

At the end of ./configure, there is a table showing which feature will
be supported for example which x-toolkit etc. In my fedora core 5 I
have these installed:

xorg-x11-proto-devel-7.0-6
libX11-devel-1.0.0-3.FC5.0

The distro I have is Knoppix live CD installed to HD.

I tried to use ./configure --with-x. But the logs ./confiure prints
will says with-x: NO
and "target to X header files" = NONE, "target to X lib files" = NONE.

Do I lack some header or lib files to make the gui? How can I install
the lacking files?

Yes. Depends on what os you are running.

I have posted what needs to install in FC5. I believe you need to find
a similar package usually ended with `-devel'.

So you need two things: some X11 user package with the libraries and  
programmes, and some X11 development package(s). Since you are on  
Knoppix, you should know. I am on Mac OS X, I can't know: it's BSD here.
