Thanks, but it didn't help. Using (ispell-change-dictionary "english") in
~/.emacs didn't help either.
hmm...will have to get used to M-x ispell-change-dictionary at the start
of sessions.

Hello,
Only related to this thread...
I am using aspell through ispell under emacs.
I wanted to add a French dictionary, and downloaded
aspell-fr-0.50-3.tar.bz2 from http://aspell.net/ (in fact from
ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/aspell/dict/fr/).
I tried to install it but found it clashed with the version of aspell
I used:
$ aspell --version
@(#) International Ispell Version 3.1.20 (but really Aspell .33.7.1 alpha)
$
I thus downloaded aspell-0.61-20050123.tar.gz and installed it, but
couldn't use it at least under emacs...
I now found that the latest version is supposed to be
aspell-0.60.3.tar.gz
Should this one work as a drop-in replacement for what I had?

You do need a modern version of the aspell binary! Recently this
version is around:
@(#) International Ispell Version 3.1.20 (but really Aspell 0.60.2)
This one will work with your modern French dictionary! The source is
somewhere on the Aspell site.
If you manage to make aspell accept and recognize words with
diacritics: could you describe us how you achieved this?

What version of Emacs is that?

It worked indeed, without a glitch.

In fact, not even this one.
Yes, it seems to work for me... What is your problem?
I do have accented words, and ispell/aspell will accept them -- or
propose corrections as for others.
It also proposes both accented and non accented words.
Everything looks fine.
I use iso-latin-1-unix as coding system in the current buffer.

In an ISO Latin-9 (ISO 8859-15, the one with €) encoded buffer
(LaTeX/AUCTeX/flyspell) aspell does not recognize for example "später"
(later/plus tard). It's two words: "sp" and "ter". The propositions
contain UTF-8/are UTF-8 encoded (from the dictionary) and incorrectly
shown in the *Choices* buffer: every byte is displayed in ISO Latin-1
or such instead of choosing the right glyph for the two or three byte
UTF-8 sequences.
I have a very simple set-up:
(setq ispell-dictionary "german8")
; (setq ispell-program-name "ispell")
(setq ispell-program-name "aspell")
(if (string= "aspell" ispell-program-name)
(progn
; (setq ispell-dictionary "german8")
(setq ispell-cmd-args "--norm-form=comp --norm-required
--run-together")
(set-default 'ispell-local-dictionary "german8")
(message "Alles für «a»spell")
)
; (setq ispell-dictionary "german8")
(message "Alles für »i«spell")
)
(add-hook 'LaTeX-mode-hook (function (lambda () (setq
ispell-extra-args '("-t")))))
The line with ispell-cmd-args does not work at all. If I use ispell
instead of aspell everything's fine!

This seems to make a difference to me! Interestingly aspell works with
the 'german' dictionary, but not with 'de' or 'de_DE'. Even more
interestingly I can use a non-existent dictionary 'german8' -- but
different from ispell aspell still does not recognize words with
diacritics in them.
I think aspell needs some more decades of development until it reaches
the state ispell had 15 years ago ...

Hi,
Even though I have the following:
(setq ispell-program-name "aspell"
ispell-dictionary "english")
when I do M-$ to check some spelling, I get the following backtrace:
Debugger entered--Lisp error: (error "Error: No word lists can be found for the language \"us\".")
signal(error ("Error: No word lists can be found for the language \"us\"."))
error("%s" "Error: No word lists can be found for the language \"us\".")
ispell-init-process()
ispell-buffer-local-words()
ispell-accept-buffer-local-defs()
ispell-word(nil nil nil)
call-interactively(ispell-word)
and the value of ispell-dictionary after that gets set to nil.
However, if I do M-x ispell-change-dictionary RET english RET, then
there's no problem.
Has anybody else seen this or have some pointers on what's going on?
Thanks in advance,
