If I understand what you are asking, see `this-command-keys'. E.g.:
(defun foo ()
"..."
(let* ((this-key (this-command-keys))
(prefix (substring
this-key
0 (1- (length this-key)))))
;; (message "PREFIX: %S, DESCRIPTION: %S"

prefix))
