Is there anyway to keep the output of M-x compile in the same buffer
instead of it spawning / cycling another?

I had the same irritation with list-buffers, then found out there's
buffer-menu which does the same except in the current buffer.

M-x compile does re-use the same *compilation* buffer each time.
