Hello!

In Emacs 22.0.50 from CVS and in 21.3.50 it works to print a buffer 
contents with diacritics when this buffer is in Unicode or it's the 
Holidays or Calendar buffer that do not explain in which mood they are. 
The € I can't see because no regular PostScript font has it.

Buffers in most Latin scripts are *not* correctly printed in PS when 
they contain diacritics.

I have a text file with this in its header ";;; -*- mode: Text; coding: 
utf-8; -*-" that displays in GNU Emacs of course in UTF-8. This file 
contains the Adobe Standard Encoding in that kind:

had time to convert the print jobs with ps2pdf14, based on gs 8.14,

encoded in other Latin scripts that do not print well ...

For Latin scripts other than Latin-1, I'm quite sure you need to
customize the value of ps-mule-font-info-database-latin, for ps-print
to work correctly.

Postscript Print Buffer

Hello guys,

I started diving into some "complicated" stuff - at least for my humble
mind: Postscript printing with emacs.  And I have to say I don't quite
get it.  The following settings are to be found in my .emacs:

 '(ps-font-family (quote Palatino))
 '(ps-lpr-command "lpr")
 '(ps-paper-type (quote a4))
 '(ps-printer-name-option "-P")

I avoided diving into this since some times now - now I want to "crack
the nut", so to say - and let me start with asking for help to eliminate
a problem first: Whenever I now try to print via Postscript Print Buffer
(B+W) the german Umlauts aren't printed - no matter which (given)
font-family I use.  If I instead use M-x print-buffer the Umlauts are
printed but the printout doesn't look so nice - which tells me, that
there is a big difference between the two commands.

I use emacs 21.4. on Debian Sarge with Cups ... and certainly I do have
way more questions ... later :-)

font-family is the wrong place to look.  You should instead customize
the value of ps-multibyte-buffer (which see).  Based on what you tell,
the value of `bdf-font-except-latin' will do what you want.

I guess that's what you mean, right?  Ok, did that but nothing changed
(yes, I byte-compiled .emacs) - no Umlauts with PS Print Buffer (B+W).

What else could I do?

I don't know, since I don't quite understand where this fragment
belongs to.

Could you simply set the option manually, before using
ps-print-buffer, and see if that helps?

You also need to restart Emacs after changing .emacs.

What do you see in print instead of Umlauts?

Also, does your Postscript printer support Umlauts and other accented
characters?

Finally, what Latin-N encoding do you use by default in your Emacs?
That is, what is your locale?

AFAIK there is just one difference between latin-1 and latin-9, and
that's the Euro-symbol in latin-9

changes to the fonts, and see if that changes something?

You need to go to the printer and look through the various sub-menus
of its Self-Test menu.  One of them should print the available fonts.

Inside Emacs, all of them are different.

Did that - even removed .Xresources and logged in - no change.  Exactly
the same output.

The printer does print out Umlauts ... there is a message right BEFORE
printing:  "Fonts for some characters not found, continue anyway ..."
so I suppose it's not the printer.

seems to do that sort of thing.

And have you noticed that PC keyboards have a "print" key ? This is my
setting for ps-print:

Have a read of the text at the front of the ps-print.el file in your
emacs\lisp subdirectory. Might give you some more ideas of what needs
to be set up.
