If it's 21.3 or earlier, move cursor to a highlighted word and type M-: (text-properties-at (point)) RET Emacs should display something like (face font-lock-builtin-face fontified t) The "font-lock-builtin-face" is what you are looking for. In the CVS version of Emacs, there's the describe-text-properties command which gives equivalent output.
