E.g., when you save a buffer, Emacs first displays "Saving /foo/bar/baz..." there, with the ellipsis to tell that a prolonged operation is in progress, then replaces that with "Wrote /foo/bar/baz". The *Messages* buffer simply stores this text verbatim.
