Can Emacs be run outside of an X window like vi?  If so, how do you run it
that way?  Thanks...

emacs -nw  if in a X-Window terminal.
You can adjust terminal settings according your termcap/CLI with
.../term/your-terminal-type.el in emacs.
otherwise emacs will start in CLI-mode at the shell-prompt.
