News is what Sacha sends, and it can be anything about Emacs, new features, development discussion, me packages, demonstrations, anything that people write about it.

If you have an RSS or Atom feed for your website, I can add it to
planet.emacslife.com and then pick up posts from there. Alternatively, you
can post links to reddit.com/r/emacs or lemmy.ml/c/emacs , or email me
links at sacha@sachachua.com .

OK, done! So this is a courtesy copy of a mail that has been
sent to Jean and Sacha as well.

The regular listing of the threads in progress on the Emacs developer list is, by itself, invaluable. How Sacha is able to discover and write about so much else is beyond my comprehension. For us, the readers, Emacs News makes visible the vigorously beating heart of today's Emacs, increasingly from around the world.

Tuesday morning would be bleak indeed were not Emacs News waiting for me in my Inbox. I can count at least 338 issues, beginning in October 2015. It is a stupendous amount work, produced week after week.

Sacha, thank you.

It sure is, but I believe it's automated to a large extent as
we just heard, e.g. with RSS and Atom ...

You're welcome! Andres Ramirez has been helping me by sharing notes about
interesting emacs-devel threads, which is great because otherwise I'm just
skimming subject lines in the date index wondering what people are talking
about. :) If someone wants to do that for the Org list or other things
they're watching, that would be cool!

able to discover and write about so much else is beyond my comprehension.
> For us, the readers,

In addition to planet.emacslife.com's aggregation of blog posts, the
wonderful folks posting, voting, and commenting on stuff at
reddit.com/r/emacs , /r/orgmode , and /r/planetemacs do most of the heavy
lifting of finding and sharing cool stuff. That lets me mostly speed-read
through posts on my phone (usually when I'm waiting for the kiddo to
*finally* go to bed) and upvote ones to include. Then there's just a little
bit of automation, a hydra for categorization, and some editing and
reordering.

Emacs News makes visible the vigorously beating heart of today's Emacs,
> increasingly from around the world.

And what an amazing community it is!

Awww, shucks! :)

If people would like to volunteer to do even more, it might be fun to add
some of the particularly useful links into, say, the EmacsWiki. Org
workflows, programming configs, neat demos, Dired or eshell tricks...
People could take charge of their favourite interests and add stuff as they
come across neat links in news. Could be fun?

Sacha, thank you.

Emacs News is basically collection of links.

My suggestion is that you setup a database with title, description and
URL, and then let people add to it on a website, as the database will
make sure that links are unique. Then you will know what is new and
what not.

Indeed, a program will then compile the newsletter based on
what dates the links were added.

It is conceivable tho that people and spambots will try to
abuse the web interface so instead of hunting Emacs news the
manual effort will be fighting spammers ... but that isn't as
boring as it sounds since a lot of that, optimally all, can be
automated as well!

Reddit and Lemmy are essentially those, with the benefits of also
supporting discussion, voting, and moderation.

One of the things on my "when I have more focused time someday" list (or,
realistically, see if anyone else wants to pick it up) is to organize
selected links into something more like maps and trails. It makes sense to
keep those on a wiki so people can update it. It's not just about recency
or popularity, or even the rough categorization I do in Emacs News. It's
more like saying, okay, this week there have been a couple of interesting
links about Emacs Lisp testing. They could be added to something that can
point people to those, Cask, ERT, Buttercup, etc. in a way that makes it
easier for people to figure out how things relate to each other or what to
try when.

Searching through the index.org in Emacs News just lets you work with
categories, URLs, and titles. I think there's an opportunity to make more
sense of things, but I don't think I'll have focus time for at least
another year. :) No worries if it sounds too vague - someone (maybe me)
will probably get to it someday!

Also, there's some space between the weekly Emacs News and the yearly Emacs
News Highlights I put together for EmacsConf. If someone wants to do a
monthly highlights thing (kind of like how This Month in Org is awesome!),
that might be neat too.

There's always helping out by writing up something you've learned or
experimented with recently. All skill levels welcome!

All sorts of non-code ways to help the community get even more connected! :)

That would sure be beneficial, take a look at the Elisp in
this post I wrote earlier tonight

  https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/help-gnu-emacs/2022-06/msg00044.html

Well, "beneficial" from the community's perspective I should
say. From my perspective in a way it's even good that it is
that bad since then I get more stuff to do. Unlike everyone
else it seems that already have full schedules I'm always on
the lookout for things to do.

I have experience with forms since 2002 and have them installed on
thousands of pages. I use simple spam filtering and there is no
problem with it.

This. I unsubscribed from emacs-devel some time ago because of the

Instead, you can use filtering and create email folder just for single mailing list. It will not bother you unless you look into the folder.

And I use sorting by thread in Mutt email client, with single key I can delete whole of the thread.

With few email settings, reading becomes joy.

Maybe, but you can use a sufficiently advanced e-mail client
instead, e.g. Emacs Gnus with Gmane which will automate it for
you (and Sacha). I have right now 3471 posts in
gmane.emacs.devel ...

OTOH, I use mu4e, which means that (a) I store my emails locally, and
disk space is _not_ infinite, (b) I don't even use "folders" (mu4e is
search-based; of course, I _could_ filter out emacs-devel), and, most
importantly (c) I don't have time to study emacs-devel anyway, so why
should I nourish a hoarding disorder?

There are various ways how people use email. Me I do not download
Emacs development emails to my local computer. I read them on IMAP
server by using Mutt client. Thus only headers are read, I can see
subjects and decide if I wish to read specific email. I can mark
threads of emails without downloading them and remove them, and focus
on just few of my interest.

Regarding mu4e, that is good to find emails, of course, especially
when there is mailing list in question.

In my work I deal mostly with people rather than with mailing lists,
and in this case most important for me is our previous conversation,
between various people and myself. Thus I am so much often first
searching for conversation with person (list of related emails), and
then maybe for some specific email.

Thus I do use local Maildir folders.

Each conversation is very easy to find, and I usually have it within a
second and by single key press in Emacs.

To ensure that conversation is easily found, when sending emails and
receiving emails, they are all recorded in specific folder for that
email address. That configuration serves as foundation to quickly
finding all previous emails related to specific contact.

For example, conversation for mbork@example.com would be saved in
Maildir folder ~/Maildir/mbork@example.com and by searching for
"borkowski" or by email address, I find your name, then I press "l"
which is in vi world "left arrow", and stands on my side for "action"
or "go right".

Email conversation or list of emails is opened by using Mutt client
(sometimes within vterm), though it could be possible in Emacs too,
there is Maildir package.

Then within the conversation I may look for particular terms or query
it various ways.

The above setup spares me of using mu tools to index emails and also
tedious mu4e
