lisp/progmodes/idlw-help.el:

;; Copyright (c) 2000 Carsten Dominik
;; Copyright (c) 2001, 2002 J.D. Smith
;; Copyright (c) 2003,2004,2005,2006 Free Software Foundation

It is not clear to me if "J.D. Smith <jdsmith@as.arizona.edu>" is the
same person as the only J.D. Smith I can find in copyright.list:

    EMACS John-David T. Smith Us 1973 2001-06-23
Assigns past and future changes.(vc.el, vc-cvs.el)
    jdsmith@alum.mit.edu

Also (for my education), does Carsten Dominik's 2000 copyright remain
because his assignment:

EMACS Carsten Dominik Germany 1961 1999-05-04
    Assigns IDLWAVE and future changes.
    Co-author: Chris Chase
    dominik@strw.leidenuniv.nl

does not contain "past" changes?

I am sure they are, but it is ok to double check if you want to.

They assigned the entire program IDLWAVE, plus any future changes to it.
That is normal; no problem.

However, I do see a real problem: we have no papers for org mode,
and no papers for his changes to Emacs since 2004.

(Maybe the original org mode was covered by his assignment of past changes
in 2004.)

I will contact him now.

How did I let this slip by? It is very disturbing!

Carsten moved IDLWAVE into Emacs in 2000, but the help support packages
were distributed separately (since they relied on non-free HTML
documentation). In 2003, a new method was developed which overcame this
issue, and idlw-help.el was moved in. Do I need to do something to update
my copyright assignment for idlw*.el? Carsten no longer maintains it.

If you say there is no problem here, fine.

If you have time to explain, however, I'd like to understand why this
file has a slightly different copyright header to most others.

Why is it:

;; Copyright (c) 2000 Carsten Dominik
;; Copyright (c) 2001, 2002 J.D. Smith
;; Copyright (c) 2003,2004,2005,2006 Free Software Foundation

Thanks for confirming!
Maybe a quick mail to assign@gnu.org asking them to add to the copyright file
the email address you use for Emacs changes would be useful?

I was confused by the fact that your assignment only seems to mention
    EMACS John-David T. Smith Us 1973 2001-06-23
Assigns past and future changes.(vc.el, vc-cvs.el)

But I probably just misunderstand the file. RMS seems to say there is
no problem.

Carsten originally submitted IDLWAVE and assigned its copyright, I
took over maintenance later (and added idlw-help), years after I had
submitted some modest improvements to VC. Probably my "past and
future changes" statement should indicate IDLWAVE as well.

My problem is, I don't understand what the '(vc.el, vc-cvs.el)' means
above. If that comment were not there, I would have no confusion.
Possibly it is just informational, but it sort of makes it look (to
me) as if your assignment were just for vc. As I said, I probably
misunderstand, so unless RMS says there is a problem, don't worry.

We don't need more papers from you, as long as you agree that your
contributions to IDLWAVE count as changes to Emacs.

    Why is it:

    ;; Copyright (c) 2000 Carsten Dominik
    ;; Copyright (c) 2001, 2002 J.D. Smith
    ;; Copyright (c) 2003,2004,2005,2006 Free Software Foundation

    and not:

    ;; Copyright (c) 2001,2002,2003,2004,2005,2006 Free Software Foundation

No matter what changes happen in the NAMES, YEARS should never be
removed. So the year 2000 should be present.

However, I don't know of any reason why should still carry the names
of Carsten Dominik and J.D.Smith. I think someone forgot to change
them. Would you please change them now?

That covers ALL his changes to Emacs. At the time, he mentioned
having changed vc.el and vc-cvs.el, but the papers are not limited
to them.
