Gnus comes with various so called washing functions. But even for
editing word-wrapping is important

I think the issue must be checked case by case. Editing wikipedia
articles is an interesting case. A mode for editing the Emacs wiki is
already available, but last time I tried (approx. 6 months ago) this
mode didn't work that good for wikipedia.org articles.
I know several people who are interested in using Emacs as an editor
for wikipedia.org. accessing the article over http isn't that
important - you can use Emacs as an external editor for webbrowsers -
but dealing with the articles' source texts is.
Such an article looks as follows
( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Park ):
<table align = right width = 400><tr><td></table>
de:Central Park sv:Central Park
Central Park is a very large park (843 acres = 3.4 km², a rectangle of 2.5 miles/4 km by one-half mile/800 m) in Manhattan, New York, New York, United States. An oasis for Manhattanites escaping from their skyscrapers, the park is well-known worldwide after its appearance in many movies and television shows.
The park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, who later created Brooklyn's Prospect Park. While much of the park looks natural, it is in fact highly landscaped. It contains several artificial lakes, extensive walking tracks, two ice-skating rinks, a wildlife sanctuary, and grassy areas used for myriad sporting pursuits, as well as playgrounds for children. The park is a popular oasis for migrating birds, and thus is popular with bird watchers. The 9.7 km road circling the park is popular with joggers, bicyclists and inline skaters, especially on weekends when automobile traffic is banned.
