Richard Stallman writes: thanks for that:-) It had entirely slipped me by for 30+ years because I only recently speech-enabled set-minibuffer-message which meant I finally heard it. Moreover that message by default triggers based on the setting of echo-keystrokes (default is 2) and it turns out I never waited that long.
