Yeah, it's a pain. If you pull down a fresh "git clone" of Emacs, it always works, but if you've done a "git pull" for a while, you invariably end up in a situation where none of the sanctioned methods for building Emacs works and most users seem to just remove the entire tree and pull down a new copy. Which is slow and annoying. Relying on git to get to a clean state (like you're doing here) sounds like a possible idea. Perhaps a target that removes all non-tracked files?
