Emacs doesnt have an inbuilt addressbook. What about adding
addressbook.el? Theres also BBDB of course but that would be difficult
to add I think.

Something like addressbook.el would be a very reasonable addition, IMHO.
The emacs wiki says that it is in development

and on its Savannah home page there is very little activity (no CVS
commits since December, no mailing list posts since 2007):
http://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/addressbook
What's the state of addressbook.el and, specifically, what remains to be
done?
