My apologies if any hand-waving was perceived; I'd be happy to construct code examples on any point, if that is needed. The reason for my comment is that the original patch requested adding a new argument to an existing function, in order to special-case the behavior of that function in a way that does not fit with its current name and purpose. I'd rather have two functions and a new command that calls the appropriate function based on its context of use. What I to avoid is coding special behavior into existing functions -- *in t= he implementation* -- simply because it is convenient. It still bothers me that `call-process-region' does this, for example, with its many and varied meanings of the "START" argument -- some of which relate neither to the meaning of "start", nor of "region". When it comes to UI, I'm in complete agreement with Eli: I love DWIM behavi= or, and think this is a virtue of Emacs, not a vice in any way. So yes, I'm just thinking about the code: modularity, ease of maintenance, clarity of purpose. These may be not be terribly specific statements, but t= hey are the motive for my comments. =2D-=20 John Wiegley GPG fingerprint =3D 4710 CF98 AF9B 327B B80F http://newartisans.com 60E1 46C4 BD1A 7AC1 4BA2 --=-=-= Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name="signature.asc" -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQGcBAEBCgAGBQJX3W+IAAoJEMFE2PTxn+Ywg4UMAIwa/XDLR+gsjkdRxhzspJxa NB5n+ao3HroLxlTRwJnHWb4aW7zTbWOUKE+IB7o5fclfq+WeWB2phm8Pd2kzSLmm 6KoFP7CPe46139Zaf1wgPU3St/ExAa/8mvUxFosHc686YsiNVxBYPvwgTQPfxL5m zKk9f7uHPA0maVbA7kT2LiN8OWpL/jGiEF+MfCnh15XH6tUdmx3ciNbjhKeQiGJM oElDhBPgSTmMi0OCm4pH5vUYZrX6EYnW7n06Wix4gXEl/MWCrAhw7hMkBWGKwXsI KqqUlmVmsBOEjH07e9wgz2u4/bEX4tYwRtb9AGtKdYhwbG7g88r9OrF9vqhobb8w KyUotoBYBC5/vJT885YVO///PQDU1N+1efd0NPQ67dvCM1ie4OwQ+fS7xbuh9scA iYRu32+HVuWZ8qVF0HuBrQe5bo2/9hosSpOJHwSjpO0dtY4gUVQ/2s2rdeOuT57o /nw8+SGuJo5GSL+ynQ5OpED0Safjtyis5CUwvig3VA== =IRyX -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --=-=-=--
