Hi there,
I believe in the emacs-unicode-2 branch, there is a bug in
ruler-mode.
M-x ruler-mode
I have asked a few people with emacs 22.0.50 22.0.90 and 23.0.0 to test
it. It shows \246 and \266 in 23.0.0 but all the other versions show
"a red # and a red pilcrow, and a yellow pipe in the ruler".
