DEFVAR_BOOL sets the symbol's value to point to a Lisp_Fwd_Bool which has a pointer to a varioble in Emacs' data segment. The variable you showed was, IIRC DEFVAR_BOOL ("inhibit-modification-hooks", inhibit_modification_hooks, It looked to me as if that pointer was bogus. Doesn't matter much - with Helmut's new dump loading code everything will change from the ground up again anyway :-).
