I think below is less likely to be in the way, since the pointer usually points upwards. So my suggestion would be to default to (setq tooltip-x-offset 0) (setq tooltip-y-offset 40) On my usual system, this and variations of it sometimes cover the menu item and sometimes not. On the `Tools' menu, for example, these values lead to a tip that does OK with `Compile' but that covers up part of `Ediff Miscellanea'. But on a `plain vanilla' Emacs, started with emacs -q --no-site-file --eval '(blink-cursor-mode 0)' the values lead to tips that never cover up their menu item. -- Robert J.
