I would think the tooltip popping up might get in the way. Try setting the tooltip-x-offset and tooltip-y-offset amounts to something different than the default. That keeps the tips from getting in the way. I just tried: (setq tooltip-x-offset 40) (setq tooltip-y-offset -40) which moves the tips quite a distance.
