I guess it should really be tied in to what the user selects at the system level. But failing that, user-configurable would be nice. We used to have 'ns-use-qd-smoothing' in the old days, which produced a look similar to the Carbon port at the time. Although it is probably relevant beyond just ns -- I'm pretty sure both Windows and X provide a similar system-level option (though hopefully it is already listened to there).
