This name is too terse for my taste.
It should at least mention something about "format".
Also I'd put a double-hyphen in it or otherwise something in its name to
indicate it has to do with backward compatibility.

Whatever name you like is fine with me. How about
'editfns--format-binary-as-unsigned"?
