I don't know what the lines above really do, tho, so I can't judge whether they're the best choice. I do know the \emacsclient -c --alternate-editor="" --eval "(pick-a-suitable-name \"%F\")" looks odd. How is this %F defined (e.g. what is it expanded to when the file you try to open contains a space or a quote character in its name)? I expected it should be more like: \emacsclient -c --alternate-editor="" %F Can you explain how your `pick-a-suitable-name` differs from that? Stefan
