I'll leave it up to you. But I usually find it pretty easy to maintain code that works on old versions which making use of new features in new versions. And it's perfectly OK to have such backward-compatibility code in emacs.git. In contrast I find it painful in the long run to have to manually propagate patches installed in emacs.git to elpa.git and vice versa (especially since you can't just `git merge`). Stefan
