Possibly as long as `jit-lock-context-time' IIUC. That seems to be unrelated to any kind of hook in font-lock-fontify-region. It seems what happens is that without the advice the text doesn't get a font-lock-multiline property but happens to still be correctly refreshed thanks to jit-lock-contextually. Or something like that. Stefan
