OK, let me write this differently: If (string (char-syntax ?:)) is equal to "_" then it is necessarily true that (char-syntax ?:) is equal to ?\_. Your test is comparable to checking if (list ) is equal to '(2) rather than checking if is equal to 2. Stefan
