I did M-x edit-abbrevs RET, and (possibly; can't remember) made some
changes in my abbrevs table; I then hit C-c C-c to save it, and got

Oh, I should mention: the abbrev file was last written by emacs
22.1.2. Perhaps the format has changed somehow between that version,
and version 23.0.50.

I can't reproduce this here. I've fixed a very similar bug in November, and
a related bug today, but today's bug fix shouldn't fix your problem.
So please try to find a reproducible test case.
