if the people who are willing to try it (myself included) prefer the
instability of merging the branch to the trunk to the inconvenience of
building a separate tree, it seems like a good idea to do the merge now.
both instability and inconvenience are temporary, but the latter doesn't
preclude the former anyway, so choosing it is not a win.
