Sorry if this has been discussed before; I haven't been following the
font-related stuff closely.
When I use the following font in .Xresources, Emacs does not display
ordinary characters: they all appear as 1px spaces. Strangely enough,
certain font-locked characters, like the scratch message, continue to
be displayed.
Emacs.Font: -misc-fixed-medium-*-*-*-14-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
To reproduce:
emacs -q
C-x k RET (kill startup screen)
asdfghj
Anyone know what this is about?

Whoops, wrong emacs info. I mean the latest CVS trunk. The bug
doesn't happen on the branch.

On my system this selects
-Misc-Fixed-Medium-R-Normal-ja-13-120-75-75-C-120-ISO10646-1 as the font
for upright ascii, whereas for italic characters it uses
-Misc-Fixed-Medium-O-Normal--13-120-75-75-C-80-ISO10646-1.

On Emacs 22, this gives:
-misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--14-130-75-75-c-70-iso8859-1
On Emacs 23, I get (from cutting and pasting the contents of the
unreadable describe-fontset buffer):
-misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--14-*-*-*-*-*-fontset-startup
