Can anyone say if src/s/umips.h is similar enough to any of the
present or past files in src/s/*.h that it might originally have been
derived from said file?

In case this question cannot be answered, we could safely delete that
file, since it is currently unused, and hasn't been used since it was
entered to CVS.

I went ahead and did that.

(Indeed, there's nothing in configure.in telling the compilation
process to include this file, so it's literally unused. The file said
that it was for running Emacs on the "Mips operating system", which
I've never heard of. I know of toy operating system dubbed "Mips",
which is used for system programming classes and runs on simulated
hardware, but I assume this wasn't that.])

There's also a "MIPS architecture"
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIPS_architecture) used in "SGI's
computer product line; many embedded systems such as the Series2 TiVo;
Windows CE devices; Cisco routers; and video game consoles like the
Nintendo 64 and Sony PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation
Portable handheld system."

See also the entry for Mips in etc/MACHINES.

It was the operating system of Mips machines, in the 80s I suppose,
before Mips was acquired by SGI.

It was installed at a time when users manually specified the
configuration files to use. There was no configure file until two
years later. Maybe umips was obsolete by the time `configure'
was added.

Is that the same as RISC/os? That would fit in the time frame.

mips-mips-riscos* is still supported by configure.

I don't think I would have called the file umips if the system
were called RISC/os. So either they changed the name of the system
and a new file was contributed, or umips is some older system.

For what it's worth, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIPS_OS

According to <http://www.tliquest.net/ryan/sgi/irix_versions.html> this is
the same as RISC/os, which was internally known as UMIPS.
