Hmmm, looks to be my bad. I found this in my .emacs, given to me by emacs-dev people from back when the vertical border face was initially implemented... ;; TTY-emacs: Use mode line face for vertical border (set-display-table-slot standard-display-table 'vertical-border (let* ((face 'mode-line) (face-offset (lsh (face-id face) 19))) (+ face-offset ?|))) I commented this out, and now the vertical border displays correctly.
