esc-del used to delete marks. Now I get:
C-M-d (translated from <escape> <delete>) runs the command dired-tree-down [2 times]
But M-del does get me dired-unmark-all-files.
I'm used to the behavior that esc-whatever is the same as M-whatever. Has this changed?

Just as in the past, the equivalence is not perfect, no. But I don't
think this has changed much in Emacs-23.
With which version of Emacs was it that "esc-del used to delete marks"?

In Today's GNU Emacs CVS, Wed, 2008 Oct 15 10:03 UTC
GNU Emacs 23.0.60.103 (i686-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.12.)
C-M-d (translated from <escape> <delete>) runs the command
dired-tree-down, which is an interactive autoloaded Lisp function in
`dired-aux.el'.
Perhaps the original poster meant <escape> <backspace>, which is also in
today's instance. See
(info "(emacs) DEL Does Not Delete")
This is the result of `describe-key' (`C-h k'):
M-DEL (translated from <escape> <backspace>) runs the command
dired-unmark-all-files, which is an interactive compiled Lisp
function in `dired.el'.
