Bug tracker change tomorrow

[Chong Yidong]

We'll be moving the bug tracker from emacsbugs.donarmstrong.com to
debbugs.gnu.org tomorrow (Thursday Dec 16).  After the switch, the
emacsbugs.donarmstrong.com domain will redirect to debbugs.gnu.org, so
the transition will hopefully be seamless.  I will send another email to
this list once everything seems to be running fine.

I realize this has been discussed before now, and that I should have
made this comment earlier, but:

"debbugs.gnu.org" is confusing name, because it implies we are tracking
Debian bugs, when in reality, it's just the name of the bugtracker
software -- like "bugzilla.gnu.org" or "cvs.gnu.org" or whatever.  (But
in those cases, there isn't another entity in the namespace already.)

If we called it "bugs.gnu.org" instead, then the FQDN can stay the same
even if the software behind it changes, and we wouldn't cause people to
mistakenly think it holds Debian GNU/Linux bugs.

Perhaps someone's anticipating that debbugs might be used for GNU
projects other than emacs?

My assumption was that gnu.org plans to track more than just Emacs bugs
in it (i.e., all projects share a bug namespace, which is what a lot of
trackers do I think).

But why sharing the web address? Do they share more?

It's often the case that bugs are shared, yes.  For example in Emacs
there are products that are part of Emacs in all but name because of
legal issues (AUCTeX, for one).  Is it an AUCTeX bug or an Emacs bug?

Welp, that doesn't seem to be working, though it was when I tested it
last week. I don't know what's changed since then.

Currently messages for old bugs are not processed by debbugs.gnu.org
(not archived and not resent to participants).  Is this a known problem?

Messages sent to debbugs.gnu.org ought to be processed correctly.

Messages to emacsbugs.donarmstrong.com ought to be redirected to
debbugs.gnu.org, and I thought they were at some point, but this seems
to have stopped working.  I'll take a look.  In the meantime, please
replace emacsbugs.donarmstrong.com with debbugs.gnu.org in your CCs.

I guess it's working now, but I'm not sure it's desirable, since it
just leads to a huge flood of spam. :(

Is there any spam-filtering before mails go to the submit list?

You're welcome to set it up.

I'll be away on vacation for the next week, so I won't be able to work
on refining the system, but you (and all others who have admin access to
debbugs.gnu.org) should feel free to do what you feel is appropriate.

Me too, so we should probably recruit some more moderators for the
-submit list. Is listhelper@nongnu.org an option for non lists.gnu.org
lists? I don't really know anything about it, but Stefan said it
moderates the emacs-bug-tracker list.

It was a serious suggestion to consider simply not forwarding mails
from the old address. I think people who aren't spammers can be
expected to start using the new address.

People who are replying to an email may not remember to switch to the
debbugs.gnu.org address.

However, I did notice that a lot of the spam had forged
####@emacsbugs.donarmstrong.com, so I added a Mailman rule to discard
messages from such recipients (we should not be receiving any mail from
there).

I've installed spamassassin on debbugs.gnu.org, with a basic setup that
simply discards all messages above the default spamassassin threshold.
Feel free to tweak if this turns out to be too aggressive.

There seem to be some problems with the mail-handling setup at the
moment as far as I can tell.

If possible, I suggest people hold off posting to the bug list for the
time being.

Hopefully it's working ok now. I resent the handful of messages that
appeared on bug-gnu-emacs without going through the tracker, so these
messages should be appearing again with bug numbers. If you want to
reply, please reply to the version with the bug number.

Note also that all input is moderated now, so there may be a variable
delay between you sending a mail and it actually reaching the bug
database.
