They are a few days that bootstrapping current trunk leaves an empty
directory '.emacs.d' in my HOME.
This happens both on Cygwin and GNU/Linux Kubuntu 8.04.1.
Is it to be expected?
(Note that in my .emacs I have (setq auto-save-list-file-prefix nil))
Cheers,
Angelo.

There's a new function `locate-user-emacs-file' that can create
.emacs.d, but it should *not* do it during bootstrap.

Not during bootstrapping, not. And, it does not create it for me.
Please try the attached patch.

For me it happens also on GNU/Linux and I do always a clean bootstrap:
CVS checkout 'plus' bootstrap from scratch.

It seems to solve the problem!
Thanks,
Angelo.

Just to comment that purify-flag is nil in bootstrap-emacs - see the
start of loadup.el - which may explain all this.

Ah, you're right.
I'm still puzzled why does it create .emacs.d on GNU/Linux and not on Windows.
