The problem is that only works for customized faces, not for those defined with lower-level functions, or for `merged' faces resulting from text-properties, etc. In fact I think one of the complaints Bob had was about a face property added by the mode-line stuff. I was envisioning a similar `face-filter,' but run somewhere just before face-realization or thereabouts.
