I am not sure I understand what I would need to do to implement for this; would like to learn though. Can you maybe point me to some function which I can take a look that would be similar to what I tried here use-case. Anyway, Eli's idea is much simpler; I just implemented and tested and it seems to work nice. I have a problem with helm-find-files but I'll post in the answer to Eli together with the patch.
