It went this way: you said point was enough to show the current execution line in a program being debugged; I said that the point is only visible if either you are in the source buffer or the cursor is visible in non-selected windows. In other words, if the selected window is the one which displays the GUD buffer, and the user customized cursor-in-non-selected-windows to not display the cursor, you won't see where point is, and thus the current execution line is invisible if there's no left fringe.
