Is jit-lock-mode turned on in your sessions?  If not, turn it on and
try again.

If JIT Lock is still not fast enough, try customizing
jit-lock-stealth-time (I have it set to 16, FWIW), and if that still
doesn't give you results you want, customize jit-lock-defer-time to
something like 0.25.
