One of our (Gentoo) users has asked me, and I'm forwarding the
question: What is the status of bidirectional support in Emacs?

I've searched the archives of this list, but the newest message that
I could find about this subject was from 2004. And m17n.org has bidi
patches for Emacs 21 ...

Nothing's changed, unfortunately. Emacs still does not support
bidirectional text.

There's an old branch with minimal integration of code I wrote 6 years
ago to implement UAX#9 algorithm in the display engine. Volunteers
are welcome to work on that branch (after re-sync'ing it with current
Emacs trunk). I'm available for discussions and advice, but not for
much more, I'm afraid, at least not in the foreseeble future.
